Cita:Square Enix ÔÇ£has some things to learnÔÇØ ÔÇô DÔÇÖAstous

Just-resigned Eidos Montreal founder Stephane DÔÇÖAstous has said Square Enix failed to capitalise on its development talent last financial year.

Square Enix had a fairly disastrous time of it last financial year despite releasing a number of triple-A titles ÔÇô Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs.

Speaking to Polygon, DÔÇÖAstous said Square Enix failed to translate game quality into sales success.

ÔÇ£We are in a situation that we have great games that could have sold more,ÔÇØ he said.

ÔÇ£They need to attack that very, very seriously. Last year was supposed to be a home-run season, but we didnÔÇÖt hit a single home run; maybe a double or a triple, but they werenÔÇÖt home runs.ÔÇØ

The publisher ÔÇ£has some things to learn about how to sell their gamesÔÇØ, he noted.

ÔÇ£They have great, great franchises. In my book content is king,ÔÇØ he said. ÔÇ£IÔÇÖm quite confident in the developer side of things.ÔÇØ

DÔÇÖAstous said that Square Enix management needs to interface and communicate more with its teams.

ÔÇ£It took a lot of time before some information came out from HQ. It was unfortunate that the senior staff of the studios didnÔÇÖt really participate in the new strategic plan,ÔÇØ he said.

ÔÇ£My management style is to have your major players participate in building a new strategic plan. But that wasnÔÇÖt the case and it was then very hard to have the buy-in of the plan that landed on our desks. It wasnÔÇÖt the way I would have worked.

ÔÇ£Communication is very lacking,ÔÇØ he added.

He now plans to remain on vacation until at least September, and noted that his departure from Eidos Montreal on Friday was carefully pre-meditated.

ÔÇ£It has been in discussion for the last few months. IÔÇÖve been really communicating my concerns, communicating my suggestions, my recommendations, since March. It has been quite tense,ÔÇØ he said.

Cita:Square financials: Tomb Raider, Hitman & Sleeping Dogs fail to hit sales targets

Tomb Raider has sold 3.4 million units in the last four weeks, which is still a failure in the eyes of Square-EnixÔÇÖs financial report. The company published a grim revision of its expected financials this morning, citing the poor performance of several titles as a key contributor.

I recommend that you check out our first report on SquareÔÇÖs financial revision here, and our report on Square president Yoichi WadaÔÇÖs resignation as a result. ItÔÇÖll put the below into context.

Another part of the Square financial report has now surfaced, breaking down sales figures for each of its key releases for across the current financial year. HereÔÇÖs an excerpt of one presentation slide:

All three games have failed to hit their sales targets so far.

The report continued, ÔÇ£Despite the high critical acclaim, [the games] failed to meet each target. In particular North America sales force as ineffective, ending up with two-thirds of number of units sold in Europe.

ÔÇ£Moreover, price pressure was strong, which forced spending additional channel costs such as price protection.ÔÇØ

Some would say 3.4 million units of Tomb Raider sold in four weeks is good considering the decline in some areas of the triple-a market.

What do you think? Should Square be concerned? Let us know below.
