We found out earlier today that Microsoft, through Windows 10, can disable pirated games (specifically, Microsoft games) on your PC. In light of that, it's a bit ironic to learn, according to Rock, Paper, Shotgun's translation of a Rocket Beans TV interview with Microsoft's Boris Schneider-Johne at Gamescom, that Windows 10 won't be able to run games that use the SafeDisc and SecuROM DRM technology.

The original interview is available on YouTube if you happen to speak German, but the relevant bit is this: "Everything that ran in Windows 7 should also run in Windows 10. There are just two silly exceptions: antivirus software and stuff thatÔÇÖs deeply embedded into the system needs updatingÔÇöbut the developers are on it alreadyÔÇöand then there are old games on CD-Rom that have DRM. This DRM stuff is also deeply embedded in your system, and thatÔÇÖs where Windows 10 says, 'Sorry, we cannot allow that, because that would be a possible loophole for computer viruses.' ThatÔÇÖs why there are a couple of games from 2003-2008 with Securom, etc. that simply donÔÇÖt run without a no-CD patch or some such."

The funny thing is that this isn't necessarily, or at least entirely, a bad thing. As RPS notes, Safedisc introduced security vulnerabilities in Windows, and SecuROM is notoriously problematic as well, so leaving them by the wayside may well be better for Win10's overall security and stability. Some games have been patched by developers or publishers to remove DRM, and DRM-free versions of many older releases are now available through GOG. Cracks are always an optionÔÇöagain, ironicÔÇöbut not everyone is capable of, or comfortable with, wading into that particular morass. And the simple fact is that not many people are likely to fall into the narrow demographic of gamers affected by the loss.

Even so, the bottom line here is that if you have a disc-based copy of a game you still like to play around withÔÇöBioShock, maybe, or Mass EffectÔÇöyou're going to need some kind of Plan B. And anyone who enjoys occasionally firing up classics from long ago may be in for unhappy surprises down the road, too. We've emailed Microsoft for more information and will update if and when we receive a reply.

Esto es un palo enorme de ser cierto.

Cuando vuelva de casa pruebo a instalar el Most Wanted clásico que lo tengo original para PC y creo recordar que usaba Safedisc.

Ojalá no funcionasen tampoco los que llevan el dichoso denuvo ese o como se escriba...

Vaya... habrá que enterarse de dichos juegos.
De los que dicen sólo tengo Mass Effect en Steam y me gustaría jugarlo en unos meses, a ver si para entonces está todo arreglado por MS o la comunidad.

Los DRM jodiendo al usuario que paga, nada nuevo bajo el sol, creo que solo me afecta por los ME y el Crysis asi que nada de valor se perdio

No se que juegos tengo que pudieran estar afectados, la verdad. Tengo el Crysis que os leo por ahí arriba que le afecta. Pues vaya...

Pues tengo que probar los juegos que tengo físico a ver cuales van y cuales no. Espero que terminen haciendo algún fix para que vuelvan a funcionar todos estos juegos en vez de estar buscando parches juego por juego. Como siempre, jodiendo al usuario que paga con estas medidas

Bueno, esto puede tener algo malo y algo bueno... Lo malo es que dejen de funcionar. Reitero que lo de no dejarme instalar el W10 junto con otro SO es una jodienda enorme en tal caso. Lo bueno es que si no funcionan... dudo que nadie saque un juego con una protección que impida que funcione en W10 así por las buenas.

Pero vamos, creo que harán alguna actualización del Windows para que los soporte. Aunque lo suyo sería una actualización que se cepille directamente esas medidas de seguridad

W10, el paraiso gamer. Esto y lo de boquear juegos piratas es el colmo. Y no;no soy pirata como tal pero a veces necesito probar los juegos para ver si me van o si vale la pena comprarlos y juegos como SWAT 4,el unico pirata qie tengo,lo tengoasi por el simple hecho de que no se puede comprar en digit en ningun lado.
Y sobre los DRM,muerte a ellos, al menos a los mas molestos

La cosa es que tanto decir que bloquearán los juegos piratas y al final se seguirán pirateando los juegos como siempre. Me jode que metan tantas medidas cuando luego es el usuario legal el que se ve perjudicado.
