The latest issue of Weekly Jump has the scoop on The Alliance Alive, a new “group performance RPG” for 3DS from FuRyu featuring artwork similar to the company’s previous The Legend of Legacy. It will launch in Japan in spring 2017 for 6,280 yen.

The story follows nine protagonists and progresses in a way that players switch between characters. The story will develop from the perspectives of these characters, who each have different standpoints and environments. The game is set in a continent ruled by magic beings and divided by the effects of a “distortion.” Rain worlds and fire worlds are just a couple of the hostile worlds that players will visit.

The magazine introduces the nine characters:
  • Tigi – Prodigy Professor
  • Vivian – Daughter of a Noble Magic Being
  • Ignace – Vivian’s Butler
  • Galil – Boy of the Resistance
  • Ursula – Galil’s Childhood Friend
  • Rachel – Guild Mercenary
  • Barbarosa – Ghost Soldier
  • Jean – Knowledgable Mage
  • Renzo – Well-Informed Young Man

Nuevos detalles:

We first found out about The Alliance Alive, FuRyu’s new 3DS RPG, through Jump last week. Famitsu follows up with plenty of additional information in this week’s issue. Along with a preview of the game itself, the magazine also spoke with a few developers.

The Alliance Alive should be considered as a new classic RPG. It uses the standards of RPGs while reconstructing the genre with the latest technology.

In The Alliance Alive, the world has been conquered by the Demon Clan for hundreds of years. It’s a world split into a number of zones, each having a unique culture. A story is told about humans who oppose the demon’s domination.

The player controls the protagonist and moves them on a distant field map. The battle system uses Symbol Encounter.

As previously mentioned, there are nine main characters, and all of them are protagonists. They begin their journeys with different plans at first, but everyone will eventually gather and move towards a single goal.

Characters include:

1. Galil: A young boy under the “Night Crows” resistance. Has a mild personality but very passionate heart.
2. Ursula: A blonde young girl also under the Night Crows. She’s completely ignorant and keeps speaking her real intentions. She also always manipulates Galil.
3. Barbarosa: A ghost knight under Night Crows. His life was saved by Ursula’s father, so he swore allegiance to him.
4. Vivian: Daughter of a noble from Demon Clan. She likes studying history, is interested in human world, and has gentle personality.
5. Ignace: A demon butler serving Vivian. His personality emphasizes order and social rank just like the usual demon.
6. Rachel: A mercenary hired by the Seal Technique Guild. She has deep humanity/empathy and will act instantly once she makes up her mind.
7. Renzo: An adult informant under Night Crows. He’s optimistic but also has eyes that calmly looks at things.
8. Jean: A technique user in the Seal Technique Guild which serves the Demon Clan. He overlooks everything and does not act impulsively.
9. Tigi: A young girl researching the Black Flow. She calls herself a professor and creates many inventions.

Next, some interview excerpts with the developers:

– After researching what the world wants but what hasn’t been made by other companies yet, the conclusion and result was that they want a RPG with a balance between story and gameplay.
– They wanted the world setting to have variety so it will be fun to even just take a stroll.
– They dared going against the current trend by fixating on how to present the world map. They wanted to make an old-school world map that allows one to actually imagine the whole picture when actually strolling inside there.
– They handled the distances between towns and dungeons, as well as the frequency of battles so that it won’t become too stressful.
– There will be also vehicles that help expand the movement range.
– The reason why there are nine protagonists is that they want players to find their favorite characters among them. – Equipment can be freely changed to weapons like the greatsword and spear.
– Battle system will have features like learning new skills inside battles, and Awakening which raises stats.
– The stronger the enemies you fight, the faster your character’s stats will grow. There’s also a feature to raise the growth rate even further.
– The party will have up to five characters with formations available. There will be a Guild system that is used to strengthen the party.

Finally, here’s the staff lineup:

Producer/director – Masataka Matsuura
Scenario – Yoshitaka Murayama
Game Design – Kyoji Koizumi
Art Director – Masayo Asano
Composer – Masashi Hamauzu
Character Design – Ryou Hirao
Developer – Cattle Call

The Alliance Alive launches in Japan next spring. Development is 65 percent complete.

One of the JRPG genre’s greatest writers is finally getting back in the business

You’ll have to excuse me while I fanboy out for a second, but this is a day I never thought I’d see again. The recently announced Nintendo 3DS JRPG The Alliance Alive has just scored a name that has resonated with me and many other JRPG fans for the last twenty years.

Cita:Yoshitaka Murayama.
He isn’t as well known as Final Fantasy’s Hironobu Sakaguchi or Dragon Quest’s Yuji Horii, but he took up responsibilities as the creator and scenario writer for the widely beloved Suikoden franchise back when he worked at Konami. He fully penned the brilliant stories of Suikoden and Suikoden II before leaving the company close to the end of Suikoden III’s development.
He did not participate in Suikoden IV or V and has been absent from the world of video games since 2005. It was then that he penned a forgettable Japanese shooter called10,000 Bullets for Taito.
FuRyu resurrects all of the best talent.

The Alliance Alive developer FuRyu has become famous in recent years for reviving the careers of many older developers from the JRPG genre. Its last game, The Legend of Legacy, was helmed by many staff members from Square Enix’s classic SaGa series.
Murayama, who has not written a memorable RPG since 2002, continues in the company’s pattern of recognizing Japan’s best talent and giving them a second chance. My interest in The Alliance Alive has just jumped ten-fold, and I’m now hoping Atlus takes a gamble on it and localizes it like it did for The Last Legacy.
FuRyu also detailed all nine of the protagonists in an interview with Famitsu.

Cita:Garil: A young man who belongs to the “Night Crow” resistance group. He has a gentle personality, but is passionate with a strong core.
Ursula: A blonde-haired girl who is part of Night Crow. She has a fresh personality but doesn’t talk much about her intensions. You’ll catch her ordering around Garil.
Barbarosa: A magic soldier of the Night Crows. Her life was once saved by Ursula’s father, to whom she swore loyalty.
Vivan: A daughter of a noble magic family. She has a calm personality and is a historian with an interest in the human world.
Ignus: Serves Vivian as a the magic family’s butler. He respects rule and rank, with a personality that sort of suits demons.
Rachel: A mercenary hired by a guild of mages. Rachel is a warmhearted girl who acts the moment something comes to mind.
Renzo: A young man of the Night Crow. He’s a good source of information, has an optimistic personality, and is able to judge things calmly.
Jean: A mage of the anti-demon guild of magic. He’s observant, and doesn’t act on impulse.
Diggy: A girl who researches the Black Flow. She invents all kinds of things, and claims to be a professor.
