IÔÇÖm sure most of you would have heard, but Square Enix announced a few months ago that Dragon Quest Heroes for the PlayStation 4 will be coming to the west in October. This isnÔÇÖt new news. However, Dragon Quest series executive producer Yuu Miyake has told Polygon that if sales for the Dragon Quest spin-off┬álive up to the companyÔÇÖs expectations then they will certainly be more confident in releasing more Dragon Quest titles in North America.
Interestingly we heard the other day that┬áDragon Quest producer┬áYuji Horii let slip that the Nintendo 3DS Dragon Quest titles will be coming to France. This certainly makes sense as JRPGÔÇÖS are known to sell in Europe, but it sounds like┬áSquare Enix is┬ámore cautious about the North American market.
ÔÇ£We want to get them out here,ÔÇØ Miyake said. ÔÇ£We really do! The Dragon Quest games are very text-heavy, so the time and the cost it takes to localize these and do it well is quite something. Business-wise, we have to think quite hard whether weÔÇÖll make that money back from localizing to North America. ItÔÇÖs always been a difficult decision. But the more you tell us, the louder the voices, the more likely we are to do it.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£WeÔÇÖre really using this as a kind of opening up of the market,ÔÇØ he explained. ÔÇ£We can gauge whether the American people might want to go back after┬áHeroes┬áand see some of the other Dragon Quest games. Hopefully we could use that as leverage to get those out over here.ÔÇØ
ItÔÇÖs got more potential to sell here,ÔÇØ he said.
