Valve said on its official blog the mode is ÔÇ£aimed at experienced players who want to play in a more competitive environment and know their matchmaking rating (MMR).ÔÇØ As of now, each player only has an invisible MMR.

To access ranked matchmaking, Valve says youÔÇÖll have to play around 150 games ÔÇô a significant time investment considering games can easily last 45 minutes or longer. If you want to play ranked games with friends, theyÔÇÖll need to have access to ranked matchmaking as well.

Once the update is released, players will enter a ÔÇ£calibration phaseÔÇØ of 10 games that determines their MMR.

We don't know when the next update will go live, but we do have a few more matchmaking details:

Coaches are not allowed in ranked matchmaking.
Matches played in normal matchmaking do not impact your MMR and vice versa.
Your ranked MMR is visible only to you and your friends. The MMR used for normal matchmaking is not visible.
Currently, only All Pick, Captains Mode, and Captains Draft are available.
You may not participate in ranked matchmaking while in the low priority pool.
