News: Dishonored designer Harvey Smith says replicating the open level design of Thief and Deus Ex is among the teamÔÇÖs most important values for their upcoming action-adventure.
Once again, letÔÇÖs begin by getting giddy about how brilliant Dishonored looks. And now, letÔÇÖs get even more giddy. I obviously knew the game was build upon the lineage of certain classics, but now that designer Harvey Smith has revealed a little more about the gameÔÇÖs ÔÇ£core valuesÔÇØ, IÔÇÖm more excited than ever.
Chatting to fans on Reddit, Smith responded to a comment about Thief IIÔÇÖs ÔÇÿLife of the PartyÔÇÖ mission ÔÇô a level thatÔÇÖs widely regarded as one of gamingÔÇÖs great achievements in terms of scope of play. The mission saw you break into an evening ball at a huge mansion ÔÇô and the number of different ways you could approach it, and the little stories you could uncover, were extremely numerous.
Turns out, this level ÔÇô along with others in the Thief and Deus Ex roster ÔÇô played a pivotal role in defining DishonoredÔÇÖs ÔÇ£core valuesÔÇØ.
ÔÇ£If you like Life of the Party in Thief II, you will like the Dishonored missions in terms of depth, combination, etc,ÔÇØ stressed Smith. ÔÇ£Our missions follow the model of games like Thief or Deus Ex. ItÔÇÖs part of our core values.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£Another thing Raf [Colantonio, Dishonored's co-designer] and I (and our leads) pushed for was breaking the patterns,ÔÇØ he added, ÔÇ£making sure that each mission has its own character.ÔÇØ
Squeeee, basically.
Smith and Colantonio revealed various tidbits of Dishonored info during last nightÔÇÖs chat. Our lovely Joannes stayed up to report on it, so you can head over to this post for loads of juicy Dishonored gumph.
